Modified Business Tax (MBT) computation and reconciliation procedure
Niural facilitates the computation of the General Modified Business Tax for Nevada clients; however, the tax calculation is intricate and involves reconciling payroll at the conclusion of each quarter.
Tax criteria
If the total of all taxable wages, excluding employer-paid health benefits, does not surpass $50,000 for a calendar quarter, the tax is $0.
If the cumulative employer-paid wages exceed $50,000 for a calendar quarter, the tax is computed at the prevailing year's rate for wages exceeding $50,000.
Niural's tax calculation process
We subtract a tax amount from each payroll, using the current tax rate, based on an estimated amount owed.
At the close of each quarter, we:
- Assess the Nevada SUI gross wages, minus the employer-paid health benefits.
- Deduct $50,000 from the wages and apply the current tax rate to the remaining wages.
- Our end-of-quarter reconciliation process refunds any excess amounts withheld beyond the calculated tax due.
Example
Total Wages for the Quarter (after health care deductions paid by the employer): $121,000
Current rate: 1.17% (latest rate used)
Payroll deductions withheld throughout the quarter: $1415.7
Calculation: $121,000 x 0.0117
Reconciliation tax amount calculated: $830.7
Calculation: ($121,000 - $50,000) x 0.0117
Customer refund: $1,087.50
Calculation: $1415.70 - $830.70 = $585
