Florida tax agencies
- Florida Department of Revenue - unemployment tax
Florida does not have state individual income tax.
State unemployment insurance tax (SUI) registration—re-employment tax
Your company becomes subject to the state unemployment insurance tax, known as the re-employment tax in Florida, under the following conditions:
1. When your company has disbursed $1,500 or more in wages during a single calendar quarter.
2. When your company has had at least one Florida-based employee working for any portion of a week for a total of 20 or more different weeks in a calendar year.
You can verify your liability by contacting the agency at (850) 717-6623.
Running payroll in Niural before you're liable for the re-employment tax (SUI)
If your current payroll requirements don't match what we mentioned earlier, Niural offers flexibility. We recommend including the specific "New employer SUI tax rate" for Florida in your payroll calculations for now.
You can find the new employer rates for each state in this resource, along with instructions on how to update the rate once your company becomes liable and receives its agency-assigned rate. During the registration process, make sure to let the Florida Department of Revenue (FL DOR) know when you expect to become liable. In the future, Niural will need the following information:
1. Your unemployment account number, which is essential for tax filing and payment on your behalf.
2. Your company-specific unemployment tax rate, assigned by the agency.
Register with the Florida Department of Revenue
The agency typically sends your account number and re-employment rate by mail within 3-5 days. To begin the registration process, please follow these steps on the Florida Department of Revenue website:
1. Visit the Florida Department of Revenue website.
2. If you are a new user, create a user profile with a username and password by clicking on "Create User Profile."
3. Enter and confirm your chosen username, email address, and password.
4. When you start the application, provide your company's mailing address.
5. When asked, "Do you use a payroll agent (such as an accountant or bookkeeper) or firm that will maintain your payroll information?", select "No." Niural doesn't handle your mail, and the agency should send correspondence directly to your business for record-keeping and sharing with parties like Niural.
6. In the "Enrollment Introduction" section, for the question, "Do you wish to file returns or pay tax electronically?":
- If you only owe unemployment tax (Re-employment Tax in Florida), select "No." Niural will handle the electronic enrollment for this tax.
- If you have other taxes to file, such as sales tax, select "Yes." Then, complete the "Enrollment" section by providing your business's information, including contact details and banking information. Follow any remaining prompts to complete the registration.

Troubleshoot third-party agent (TPA) authorization issues
To ensure a successful enrollment under our unique agent number with the Florida Department of Revenue (FL DOR), it may be necessary to obtain special authorization for Niural to handle your tax payments and filings on your behalf. To ensure seamless alignment, please double-check that the information you've provided in Niural matches what is on record with the FL DOR, including:
1. The official company name and address.
2. FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number).
3. RT Number (re-employment account number) – Ensure that this number is both active and accurate.
4. Reemployment rate.
If you encounter any difficulties while attempting to verify this information online, we recommend reaching out to the agency directly at (850) 488-6800 for assistance and clarification. This proactive step ensures that your enrollment process proceeds smoothly and with precision.
Third party access notifications in Niural
If we've conveyed that accessing your reemployment account through a third party is not feasible, there are several potential reasons for this situation:
1. Inactivity of Your Account: If your account has been inactive for a period exceeding 8 quarters (or 8 consecutive quarters with no filed returns), reactivation options are contingent on the duration of inactivity:
-
If inactivity is less than two years, you can reactivate by either:
- Contacting the Department of Revenue at (850) 488-6800 and providing your FEIN and Reemployment account number.
- Requesting reactivation on the Florida Department of Revenue website, completing all required information, and selecting the "reactivate" option in Step 5. You should receive reactivation confirmation within 5 business days.
- If the inactivity surpasses two years, you can reactivate it online through the Florida Department of Revenue's website. Start by checking the box that asks, "Are you starting a new taxable business activity at an already registered location?" For any questions about this process, reach out to the agency at (850) 488-6800.
2. Previous Service Provider Access: If your previous service provider still holds third-party access to the account, you need to request them to revoke their access, as their access takes precedence over Niural's attempts to gain access.
3. Invalid Account Number: It's possible that the account number you entered in Niural is invalid. In such a case, contact the Department of Revenue at (850) 488-6800 to obtain a valid account number.
4. Mismatched FEIN: If the FEIN in Niural doesn't match the one you used to register for your Reemployment account number, contact the Department of Revenue at (850) 488-6800 to verify the FEIN associated with your account. Ensure that the FEIN in your Niural account matches the one confirmed during the verification process.
