How it works
On adding a new work address in a different state or recruiting a new employee who has been allocated a work address in that state, you can access registration support within Niural.
The pricing is subject to change based on the state.
Here's an overview of the procedure:
1. Provide essential business details.
2. Niural and Middesk will verify the accuracy of the information.
3. Registration applications are normally sent within 3-5 business days.
4. Look out for registration details from Middesk in the mail.
5. Middesk can guide you through entering any data they don't handle on your behalf through Niural.
Initiate the state tax registration process
- Sign in to Niural as an employer.
- Navigate to the Company details tab under Company.
- Select Tax Setup.
- Under “MissouriTax Setup”, click Let Niural register for you.
Note: Niural can only register for you if you don't yet have a state account already.
- Enter company information on Middesk.
- Once you submit your order, we will send you email updates regarding the status. The total cost of your order will be added to your upcoming monthly invoice.
- Check the status of your order
- Once your order is finalized, you will receive emails from both Niural and Middesk. These emails will outline the subsequent actions, including:
1. Reviewing registration information.
2. Any additional state-specific instructions.
Before your order is finalized, you can use the link provided in the state registration confirmation email from Niural to track the progress of your order.
Cancel your order
If an order is already completed, you'll need to contact Middesk to cancel.
If an order is in progress you can email us at support@niural.com.
You'll be refunded, but it can take a few business days to process.
Register with MO agencies on your own
Income tax withholding and unemployment tax
New employers in Missouri can register for both income and unemployment tax together. Here's what to expect:

You should receive your account numbers in 1-2 weeks.
- Keep this time frame in mind when planning your first Missouri payroll—you'll need the tax account numbers entered in Niural in order to process payroll for Missouri employees.
- Your Department of Revenue withholding tax identification number will be 8 digits.
- You will also receive your assigned withholding tax deposit schedule.
- Your Department of Labor and Industrial Relations employer account number will be 10 digits.
Both account numbers and your withholding tax deposit schedule need to be entered in Niural by clicking the Taxes & compliance section and selecting Tax setup.
Register your company

Some companies are required to obtain a charter number or certificate of authority number to operate in Missouri. These numbers are obtained after registering with the Missouri Secretary of State.
- If you're unsure if your company needs to register with the Secretary of State, please contact the agency at 866-223-6535.
- For most companies, the charter number or certificate of authority number from the Secretary of State will need to be included when registering for both income and unemployment taxes in Missouri.
- Visit the Missouri Online Business Registration website.

Click Start registration here at the bottom of the page to begin the process, and make sure to register for withholding tax and unemployment tax.
- Most companies are liable for state unemployment if they pay more than $1,500 of wages in a calendar quarter or have an employee for some part of a day in each of 20 different weeks.
Unemployment insurance rate
You can locate your Unemployment Insurance tax rate by referring to the most recent Notice of Liability you received from the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Alternatively, you can obtain this information by contacting the agency at (573) 751-3215.
- Keep in mind: there are special cases for those in the mining, construction, and non-profit industries.
Enter the tax account information in Niural
Once a valid Missouri work address has been added in Niural for one or more employee(s), you can add your tax account information:
1. Go to the Company details section in your Niural account.
2. Click on Jobs and Pay.
3. Select Edit on Missouri Tax Setup.
4. Enter your rate name here.
If you don’t have your agency-assigned rate, use the current year's "New employer rate" from here.
Update your rate in Niural only if it differs from the current one.

Kansas City
Employees residing or working in Kansas City are liable for a City and Earnings tax imposed by the City of Kansas City's Finance Department. To enable Niural to handle the filing and payment of your taxes to the City of Kansas City, we require specific authorization.

For businesses with activity in St. Louis, you'll need to register with the St. Louis Collector of Revenue—Niural needs this to pay your St. Louis City Tax and Payroll Expense Tax.
To register:
- Completing Form E-9.

- If you have any questions, call the agency at (314) 622-4111.
For businesses that do not conduct operations in St. Louis but employ residents of the city, there is no legal obligation to withhold taxes from St. Louis residents when there is no business activity taking place within St. Louis. However, businesses may opt to establish a withholding account as a courtesy by submitting form E-9 and selecting the "Withholding for City Resident Only" option. If you choose to do so, please reach out to our team through the Help section of your Niural account to arrange for courtesy withholding within Niural.
- Note: If the business decides not to provide courtesy withholding for its resident employees, there is a legal obligation to report all city residents to the city. To fulfill this requirement, the business must be configured as an agency for reporting purposes only. Please get in touch with the St. Louis office at (314) 622-4805 to initiate this process.
Third party authorization (TPA) is required
For Niural to file and pay your City Earnings and Payroll tax to the city of Kansas City, we need special authorization.

If you've previously processed payroll in Missouri, you can locate your Unemployment Account Number by referring to either of the following:
